Over the past three years, gas bills have doubled while wholesale prices have fallen.
There is mounting frustration that consumers have failed to benefit from falling prices on the wholesale market.
Research suggests that energy companies have been using information selectively to show they have been doing more for the customer than they have. Two years ago, the date often used by energy companies in their comparisons, is when wholesale prices were at their lowest.
There is also some criticism that energy suppliers have been selective in passing on savings, for example online gas customers saw a drop of 3% in British Gas bills compared to an average of 9% for all their customers. Also, many of the price cuts being announced by the suppliers is only valid from April, not now.
