A government study has estimated a £2.25bn-£6bn a year cost to the UK if it is to achieve the 2020 renewable energy targets set out by the EU.
Currently the UK gets less than 2% of its energy from renewable sources. According to the government for the UK to reach the 20% target, 40% of electricity would have to come from such sources.
Another study done by Ernst & Young has predicted that by 2025, half of the UK's electricity will still come from gas-fired power stations, renewables will provide only 16%,wind farms 7% and nuclear power stations 11%.
